Keyword Search Tips

A keyword search can be conducted on a word or a phrase, or a combination of words, phrases and boolean operators.   

Some of the boolean search operators and examples of each, that can be used in the Keyword Search are listed below.    

• OR-hydroelectric OR dam.  A document must contain one or the other, but not necessarily both.

          This will return documents that may have hydroelectric or dam, but will return a document that has hydroelectric

           and dam in the same document.

• AND-hydroelectric AND dam
• NOT-hydroelectric NOT dam

• "   "  -  Quotation Marks-"Federal Energy Regulatory Commission". search exact phrases.
• BEFORE- Hydroelectric BEFORE Power.  This will only pull up documents where hydroelectric precedes power.
• ()- Used to combine multiple items, but not as a phrase.    
• PARAGRAPH="Interstate commerce" + PARAGRAPH + "natural gas"  Search instances where interstate

          commerce and natural gas are in the same paragraph.

• SENTENCE-"Interstate commerce" + SENTENCE +  "natural gas". Search instances where

           interstate commerce and natural gas are in the same sentence.  

• XOR-hydroelectric XOR dam-Returns documents that contain the word hydroelectric or dam.  

          A document must contain one or the other, but not both.  This will return documents that have hydroelectric or dam,

          but will not return a document that has hydroelectric and dam in the same document.
